CityDensity uses population data from the Global Human Settlement Layer (GHSL) produced by the European Commission's Joint Research Centre.

The data measures population density at 1km resolution in concentric rings around city centres, from 0km to 100km. For each city, we calculate:

• Population within each distance ring
• Cumulative population from the centre outward
• Population-weighted density (accounting for how people cluster)
• Density with and without water area

City centre coordinates are sourced from GeoNames. If you notice a city centre is incorrect, use the form below to suggest a correction.
